I've been juggling these thoughts in my head about Looking at Student Work. How hung up should we get on protocols? Do we need strict adherence at first until we attain our desired culture???

Reflections on Cadre Training Sessions

Hi Folks: I just wanted to write a quick note concerning our work with each other on Saturday and Monday… First and foremost I would like to offer my thanks to everyone for such thought provoking and reflective conversation concerning the task ahead of us. I really enjoyed hearing from everyone and felt that we started to gel as a community of learners. I appreciated everyone’s efforts and I’m energized for the Looking as Student Work (LASW) sessions. I really want to publicly thank Sue Sward for going out on the skinny branch during the “Tuning Protocol”. I want to learn more about Art so that I can talk like an artist…Sue, I’m afraid I’ll need a lot of scaffolding… I have already met with many of you and requested your thoughts about our work on Saturday and Monday. After speaking with many of you I’ve noticed some common themes that many of you share. Many of you agree that our work shouldn’t focus on NEASC or SALT out of context. However, you felt that we should be able to make explicit connections as to how our LASW work sessions might help our participants view their work with SALT or NEASC. I don’t have a problem making connections for people regarding our LASW sessions and SALT/NEASC. I would be dismayed if LASW was something that we did only because of SALT or NEASC. If the SALT/NEASC process serves as the catalyst for our colleagues to look at student work then I can live with that… I would make explicit connections with participants that SALT/NEASC expects that a culture of LASW exists in a high functioning school. This is the beginning of our work in creating a school-wide culture of looking at student work. I’m sure the PowerPoint presentation could include this explicit connection…I’ll work on that and forward it for your comments, suggestions and/or revisions. Many of you had questions about the relationship between you and the co-facilitators. I don’t want to speak for Nancy or John, but I don’t think I would be out of line to say that Nancy, John and I will provide whatever scaffolding or support you feel is necessary. As our work continues over the school year and we move into another series of workshops I’m sure we can discuss what type of support you feel you need as a facilitator. If you want to fly solo, work with another colleague or continue your work with one of us I’m sure that is open to discussion. I’m beginning to work on a LASW web space that we can use to share documents, and continue discussions about the work ahead. Please reply with any other thoughts or ideas I might have missed. Thanks, Jim
