Frequently Asked Questions

I am very happy to post answers to your questions on this page.  I've answered a few of those most frequently asked of me at the beginning of the school year.

Thank you, Mrs. Peluso

•Q.   What are the hours of school this year?

•R. Children will enter the building at 8:45am at which time they may go to breakfast or sit in the gymnasium to await the beginning of class. There will be teacher supervision in both the cafeteria and gymnasium. At 9:00am all children will walk up to their classroom and school will begin.  Students are considered late after 9:00am.  School is dismissed at 3:10pm.  Parents picking up their child should plan to arrive at the bus door (the side door nearest Hay Street), by 3:05 to assure there is no traffic when students are actually dismissed.

•Q.   What is the price of breakfast and lunch?

•R. Breakfast is $.60 and milk is $.50 each day.  Lunch is $1.60.  You may apply for free or reduced lunch, also.  You may request an application at any time from the office throughout the year.

•Q.   If I need to change my child's pick-up or drop-off by the bus, what do I do?

•R. Children may ride only their assigned bus. Any changes due to home address change will need to be made through our school office.  We will contact our bus company with the change and a period of at least 3 school days will be necessary to make the change in the bus office.

•Q.   What happens if I decide to pick up my child instead of sending him on the bus as I do each day?

•R. This is a great question! Very Important!  If your child takes the bus and will be picked up on a particular day, you must send a note saying your child will be picked up.  Since children like to be picked up and soon figure out if they miss the bus or tell us you're picking them up, then you'll need to do just that. Your child will be placed on the bus, as he regularly is placed, if you do not send a note.  Please do not tell your child to tell us - we understand that not all families can pick their children up and if we hold your child from the bus when you in fact did not want that, sometimes it is very difficult to get that child home in a timely manner.  Remember- no note, your child goes on the bus.  Many thanks for your assistance in this very important matter.

•Q.   How do I contact my child's teacher through e-mail?

•R. You may find all teachers e-mail addresses on our school website.  If you have trouble finding it, please just call our school office and we'll be happy to give it to you.

•Q.   If I have a concern about my child's day, whether it be regarding a staff member or school incident what should I do to resolve my questions?

•R. By all means do not hesitate to call on me.  You may call, send a note in with your child that you would like to see me, or you may even just come to the school.  If I am attending to the children or at a meeting when you come into the school, I will free myself as quickly as possible so that we might talk.  I appreciate it that you come to me and we discuss your concern first.  I will ask you to give me a chance to find out some facts, and I promise to get back to you as soon as possible.  If together we are unable to work out your concern, I will be happy to call Dr. Celeste Bowler, who is our district's Director of Elementary Education.  She is a wonderful advocate for all children, and very knowledgeable, too. She will sit with us as we address your concern.  I assure you we will take all of your questions and concerns seriously and do our best to solve them in a manner that is most agreeable and best for the child.  Please remember, my door is always open.

•Q.   If my child is late once in a while, is that OK?

•R. It is very important that you send your child to school each day and that your child be on time.  Your child will be late as of 9:00am.  If your child is late the first time, you will receive a note reminding you of the importance of starting school each day, on time.  If the pattern continues, I will ask you to come to school so that we might sit down together to develop a plan to improve your child's promptness.  Certainly, we understand that there are unexpected circumstances, and we understand these few occurrences.

Q.   Are there any Day Care Programs at Horgan?

R. After school, we have the Kent County YMCA School's Out Program housed at our school.  This program is run by the Y, so you must contact them directly for an application to the program.  Historically, it has been a well run program and the children enjoy it very much.
