John F. Horgan Elementary School Profile
Governance: The West Warwick School District is governed by five elected school committee members. The district administrative team is led by Superintendent of Schools, Kenneth Sheehan. The administrative team is completed with Principals: Karen Tarasevich, West Warwick High School; Brian Dillon and Richard George, Deering Middle School; Joan DeAngelis, Greenbush Elementary; Donna Peluso, Horgan Elementary; and Keith Remillard, Wakefield Hills Elementary.
Building: The present John F. Horgan Elementary School building was first opened as a junior high school at Royal Square, Riverpoint, in September, 1927. The building cost $300,000 to build and housed 30 classrooms and a state-of-the-art gymnasium. Algernon S. Gallup was Principal and Miss Maisie E. Quinn was Assistant Principal. The Superintendent of Schools was John F. Deering. The school became an elementary school in September, 1971. Approximately 600 children in grades kindergarten to six attended. Sometime later, all district kindergarten children were moved to the Maisie E. Quinn Elementary School. In September, 1999, kindergarteners returned to their home district schools and Horgan became a Kindergarten to Grade Five elementary school with approximately 550 students. Today, John F. Horgan remains a Kindergarten to Grade 4 Elementary School with approximately 520 students.
Student Body Description: According to the RI Department of Education October Membership, 2007, statistical data, John F. Horgan Elementary School supports children of the following decent:
1% American Indian/Alaskan 7% receive ESL Services All children are eligible to receive Title I Reading Services as needed and prescribed
Faculty and Staff Description: The Principal is joined by the following staff in service to the children of West Warwick:
23 Regular Classrooms to include: 5 Kindergartens; 5 Grade One Classrooms; 4 Grade Two Classrooms; 4 Grade 3 Classrooms; and 5 Grade Four Classrooms. The classroom teacher is supported by Specialist teachers in Art, Music, Physical Education, Library Media, and Guidance.
Three full-time Reading Specialists, one ELL Resource Teacher, and eight Special Educators support the individual needs of our youngsters in a collaborative setting. A Full-time Nurse and Part-time Social Worker complete the circle of support.
Beside the 44 members of our professional staff, our teaching staff is supported by six teacher assistants in Special Education, ESL, and Reading. A Behavior Assistant serves all children in matters of discipline, building safety, and staff support. A Principal's secretary, two clerks, three custodians, and three food service workers round out the Horgan team. Each member of the 65 total staff, is valued and appreciated.
