In September, we are reading books about school, buses, friends and numbers.

In October, we are reading about autumn, pumpkins, bats and scarecrows.

We are reading books in November about Native Americans and their culture. We began with Knots on a Counting Rope and we have a counting rope in our classroom. Everytime we read a Native American tale, we put another knot in the rope. The children loved this book! Ask them about it.

In December we will be reading some of my favorite books:

The Polar Express by: Chris Van Allsburg SchoolCenter Picture

The Wild Christmas Reindeer SchoolCenter Picture

Christmas Trolls

Who's Knocking on Christmas Eve

Gingerbread Baby  SchoolCenter Picture

All of the above written and illustrated by: Jan Brett

In January we continue with Jan Brett and read:

The Mitten

The Hat

In Febuary we read books about Groundhog Day, The Hundredth Day of School, Abe Lincoln, George Washington and Valentines Day

We love to sing in our class. We sing about everything we learn from reading to math to science. We learn on our feet not in our seat. Click on the singing mouse to visit Dr. Jean Feldman's website. This is where you can buy her music.

Here are some ideas for helping your child at home.

**Check homework each day and make sure it gets back to school.

**Read and have your child read to you every day.

**Talk about the pictures when you are reading a book.

**Tell your child to stretch the word that they are sounding out like bubble gum.

**Talk about the setting of the story and the characters.

**Sing songs that we learn at school.

**Act out stories.

**Draw pictures of the characters.

**Choose your favorite one.

**Most of all read...read...read...

Hands On Science For the next three months, our class will be learning about balance and motion. We will be using hands on experiences and investigation strategies to help the children understand balance. Look for photos of our investigations on your future visits to our site. They will be in our scrapbook page.

Our Next Science Adventure involves Rocks, Silt and Sand.  We are seperating rocks, sand, pebbles, gravel and using water to find changes in the rocks.  We are observing types of rocks and we recently did an experiment that allowed the students to seperate sand with water and leave it overnight to develop a layer of silt on the top.

Our last science exploration involves planting. We will be planting brassica, wheat, and grass seeds. We will look at parts of plants and even bulbs.
