School and district news (updated 3.13.13)
West Warwick High School SADD hosted a walkathon to benefit the Tori Lynn Andreozzi foundation. The walk was held on April 6th at he high school track. We had 123 people sign in that day to walk. The great thing about this event was the community participation. The students raised $2900.00 in sponsorship thought the community of West Warwick and beyond. They also obtained $400.00 in donations of gift cards, food, water etc for the walkathon. At the event, they had the services of DJ Anthony volunteered, AT&T attended with a texting and driving simulator, Neighborhood Health and Thundermist took part. The West Warwick Fire and Police Honor Guard attended the event as well as other fire fighters and police officers. Senator Satchel and the Young Democrats as well as Congressman Langevin attended. The community turnout was amazing. Overall this event raised over $9300.00 dollars for the Tori Lynn Andreozzi Foundation!
West Warwick High School SADD took part in the annual MADD Mocktail competition It is a competition between all the high school SADD groups in the state to create the best non-alcoholic drink, design a table presentation that incorporates our drink, our victim, and the theme of the event which was imagine. Our 21 kids created the Karate Kick Smoothy which uses frozen strawberries, bananas, coconut juice, lime and agave. A drink for athletes. At the event, the kids need to make their drink and give a presentation to all the people who visit the table. Judges come around and rate each group. Prizes are for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place and there is a People's Choice award. Attendees can get tickets and place them in the basket for which table they thought was best. West Warwick won the People's Choice award this year having the most votes by the attendees.
Not only do the kids have a great time, but they learn so much from both events. They had to plan, set a time line, develop pledge forms and sponsorship forms, solicited sponsors, design the t-shirt and flyers, write letters, send thank you notes, learn budgeting and time management skills, and orally present information to many people. The amount of work that went into this was immense They gained self esteem and the knowledge that they could make a difference in someone else life. They also represented West Warwick High School in a very positive way.
